Eating for Health

The Power of Choice

How long have you been suffering with weight issues? For some it has been a life-long battle of the bulge. For others, it may be due to an injury, which has limited their activity and mobility. There are reports that genes have a big hand in what you end up weighing. It seems that the world is not only growing in population, but in weight as well. Many people have blamed the large fast food establishments for the rise in average body weight. While fast food does contribute to weight gain, they aren't the sole cause. Fast food establishments may have great commercials, but that is just that. We have the power of choice. We have the power of deciding whether to eat steak or fish. We can choose to eat baked chicken or fried chicken. We can choose to drink soda or water. We can choose to drink juice or milkshake. The power of choice is something that some in poor countries and even parts of the United States do you not have.

Notice how, in times of great hunger, we will eat just about anything in sight? Notice how, in those times of hunger a fast food commercial becomes almost irresitable to everyone? Do you wonder why that is? Convenience...that's why! Think about it, when you are that hungry, no matter how bad the food is for you, your mouth waters at the image of anything edible. While you know that what you are eating isn't that healthy or good for you, you can't help it. The desire to gratify your hunger overrides your desire to eat healthy and avoid weight gain. Weight loss and healthy eating take the back seat and after licking your fingers and picking the crumbs of the plate, you are racked with guilt at "falling off the wagon."

What is the best way to overcome this? Carry healthy snacks around with you. An apple is fantastic tasting treat and extremely portable. As the saying goes, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." If you reach for an apple or two instead of a burger and fries, your body will be healthier and you will be less likely to end up in the doctors office discussing diabetes, obesity, cholestrol and other health issues that may arise. An orange can be a bit messy, but it is packed with Vitamin C and many other nutrients to keep your body running smoothly. Vitamin C is touted as a great way to fight free radical damage in your body, which can cause people to age more rapidly. Tomatos are a great source of lycopene, which is considered to be a cancer fighting agent, and a salad just isn't the same without tomatoes. Celery is a great snack, but beware of the calories contained in the dips you use with it. Bananas are loaded with potasium and are extremely easy to carry with you whenever you go out. The list of healthy fruits and vegetables goes on and one.

The power of choice is the greatest agent against weight gain. If losing weight is your goal, learn to use that power. Even if you don't have a weight problem, moderation of extremely fatty foods is essential for overall good health. Grab a fruit or vegetable instead of a bag of chips. Maybe you might even want to get yourself a juicer and make some healthy drink for much less than it would cost elsewhere and take it with you. Remember a little sacrifice here and there can go a long way, not only with weight loss, but with your overall health as well.
